Recommendations

We generally recommend:

  • Measuring after tile installation
  • Professional design and installation
  • High-quality hinges
  • Appropriate glass thickness based on engineering
  • Proper silicone for the substrate
  • Matching hardware finishes
  • Designing around the location of the shower head
  • Considering door swing before plumbing/fixtures are finalized

We do not recommend:

  • Buying inexpensive online glass and finding someone to install it
  • Installing generic kits in custom openings
  • Choosing glass thickness solely based on price
  • Assuming thicker glass is always better
  • Treating shower glass as a waterproofing system
  • Using household cleaners that can damage finishes
  • Designing a door swing without considering clearance

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of glass should I use for my shower enclosure?

We typically recommend ⅜” thick glass for your frameless shower enclosure. Framed shower glass is thinner. Large frameless glass may be up to ½” thick if it is very tall, very wide, or supporting the weight of an operable door. We follow the guidelines of the National Glass Association for thickness of glass and safety.

Do you use tempered glass?

Almost all of the glass that we work with is tempered glass with the exception of mirrors, some glass table protectors, and some cabinet glass. Tempered glass is 4 times stronger than regular, annealed glass. It cannot be re-cut once tempered. Tempered glass is required for shower enclosures by code.

What is the difference between a shower door and shower enclosure?

A shower enclosure refers to the whole enclosure including panels and doors while a shower door refers to the operable door itself. Some people may say “shower door” and refer to the entire enclosure. Be sure to clarify the number of pieces of glass and the operation of the glass whether it is fixed, swinging, sliding, or even tilting in the case of a glass transom.

Do you repair showers?

We are not able to repair framed shower doors. There are too many manufacturers and pieces involved for us to be able to resolve issues at a fair price. We would be happy to quote you for a new, frameless shower enclosure if you would like.

We can occasionally repair a frameless shower door, particularly if it requires a minor adjustment to the door or hinges or other minor repair work like silicone. We cannot however, repair leaks or guarantee that we could resolve a leak especially on a shower door that is not our own because we do not know the origin of the leak or the history of the shower.

Can you install a shower door I bought from Home Depot or online?

We are not able to install materials that are not our own. We cannot be proficient in installing every online offering, guarantee the quality of the system, or be held liable for damages to your materials. For these reasons, we are unable to install enclosures that are not purchased from our shop.

What are the advantages of a frameless shower door?

  • It is easy to detect and resolve water leaks.
  • Cleaning and maintenance is much easier. Water does not harbour in the framing like it would in a framed shower, resulting in leaks and water damage as a result of mildew build-up.
  • These enclosures add value to your home without a large remodel investment.
  • Your bathroom will look and feel bigger and more open.

Are frameless shower doors expensive? What contributes to the price?

Frameless shower doors are not a cheap product, however, they are a great way to enhance the appearance of a bathroom without the expense of a remodel. The price is typically based on a combination of size, hardware, and labor.

Do you have a showroom?

We have a showroom in Norcross where you can take a look at many of our most popular options! We highly recommend booking a showroom appointment instead of just walking in, so that you’re guaranteed well-prepared and attentive service.

Is your pricing competitive? Do you price match?

While we can never be sure how our pricing compares to our competitors, we regularly review our pricing based on the current market, material costs, and customer feedback to ensure we are remaining competitive. We do not price match because we are never sure exactly what materials we are being compared against. We do not use channels as structural clamps, and we do not compromise on our door hinges. We use the best materials from CR Laurence and other high-end hardware vendors, and we use specialty silicones for different tile types. We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and quality of installation.

Do you remodel and/or install tile?

We do not remodel or install tile, however, we work with some incredible professionals in our industry and would be happy to pass along their information for your specific service area and requirements.

Are you insured?

We are fully insured with general liability and worker’s compensation. Please let us know if your building or HOA requires proof of insurance on file.

What does your warranty include?

We offer a three-year limited warranty on materials and labor. While warranty calls are not common, our typical warranty call is a routine door adjustment, which most commonly occurs immediately after installation when the hinge gaskets compress or seasonally as older homes settle or move. We occasionally receive a call soon after installation about minor silicone gaps which, we are more than happy to repair. We are not, however, able to clean and reapply silicone over the lifetime of the shower. This is considered routine shower maintenance and must be redone every 3-5 years depending on your tile type (man-made product versus natural stone).

Do you fabricate your own glass?

No, but we partner with numerous trusted, high-quality glass fabricators to source the best glass for your specific project. This means that we have a broader range of options at competitive prices because different fabricators have different specialties.

Can I just buy the glass from you and install it myself, or have my contractor install it for me?

No, because it’s a liability issue. If we don’t install our glass ourselves, we have no way of knowing if it was installed correctly and/or safely, and thus we cannot guarantee our expected level of quality.

How much does a shower door or shower enclosure cost?

The Shower Door Guy provides custom, professionally measured and installed shower enclosures from start to finish. Because every enclosure is custom, pricing depends on the size and configuration of the enclosure, number of glass panels, glass type and thickness, hardware, finish, complexity, and installation requirements.

As a general budgeting guideline, most custom frameless shower enclosure projects in our market fall within the range of $800–$3,500, with simpler door-and-panel configurations generally costing less and large, complex, premium, or specialty-glass enclosures costing more. Our average sale is approximately $2,000, but we have competitively priced options for almost any budget or price range. Please note that our pricing includes installation which is not included in the price of shower doors from big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes or online retailers like Dreamline, The Original Frameless Shower Door, Wayfair, or Amazon.

Our pricing is all-inclusive and includes materials, installation, applicable sales tax, credit card fees, and our three-year limited warranty. We provide a project-specific quote rather than charging separately for individual components.

Our general pricing guidelines can be found below and are subject to change at any point without notice.

Can I put glass over a pony wall, install from floor to ceiling, next to a window, on a kneewall, on a tub deck, install a panel without a door, install glass on a bathtub, install glass on a curbless shower, on uneven tile, on fiberglass, on marble, or on porcelain?

Yes to all of the above. There are many considerations we take into account when we discuss your shower glass project with you, however, we can install shower glass in almost every case.

Will a frameless shower door leak?

Frameless shower enclosures are not water tight and may leak if not measured and installed by a professional.

Leaking may occur if water is pointing directly at an opening or gap next to an operable door, if the shower is small, if the curb is pitched incorrectly, or if the water pressure is very high.
